Authorities in the city of Newburgh held a news conference Friday to address the uptick in gun violence and the shooting of four teens earlier this week.

Four teens are recovering after fights in the street turned into gunshots in the area of Newburgh Free Academy.

Cellphone video shows dozens of kids scrambling to safety after 10 gunshots were fired.

Newburgh Mayor Torrance Harvey says the uptick in violence is not limited to Newburgh.

"Newburgh isn't the only place dealing with this -- this is happening in other areas," says Harvey. "We must bring peace back to our streets."

According to the city's police department, violent crime in Newburgh is up 20% this year with nearly 100 confirmed incidents involving gunshots.

Police are renewing efforts to target high gun violence areas and expand police presence on the streets.

"It is time for us to take charge of our city. This is our youth," says Newburgh Police Commissioner Jose Gomerez. "This is not people from outside coming in. This is us creating this trauma to ourselves."

All three of the school's campuses remain closed. A spokesperson for the school district says officials have not yet decided whether schools will be open Monday.
