Aerin Frankel is a first-time Olympic gold medalist, a Westchester County native, and is now a part of the U.S. Olympic women's hockey team history.
The team shocked the world on Feb. 19 with a nail-biting, overtime win against longtime rival, Team Canada.
Frankel, who has roots in both Chappaqua and Briarcliff Manor, and her 23 teammates, cemented their spots in history by becoming the third Olympic women's hockey team to win a gold medal.
"...So many emotions, so much excitement, getting to share that with friends and family, but it was kind of a moment of pride for us that we had represented our country and done so at the world's biggest stage," said Frankel.
Her father, Peter, uncle Josh, and around 20 friends and family were there the moment history was made.
Back home at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx, her 97-year-old grandmother, Lydia, joined along in spirit.
"I'm hoping to be able to get home soon to bring the gold medal for her to hold. It would mean so much to me," said Frankel.
Frankel is in her third season as a goalie with the Professional Women's Hockey League's Boston Fleet.
While she calls Boston home now, she says she's honored to represent Westchester in the big leagues.
"Knowing that I had a lot of support meant a lot to me, and hearing from some of my teachers from the Chappaqua Central School District was incredible, and I thank them for all their support while I was in Milan," she says.
Frankel says for now, she is just excited to continue playing hockey with the Boston Fleet.
Aerin's dad, Peter, says she will be throwing the first pitch at the team's home opener on April 3.
