The violence-prone City of Newburgh may not be getting any safer after leaders propose layoffs for more than a dozen police officers.

The city's early 2012 budget calls for 15 cops to be let go. The news comes after a 15-year-old boy was injured during a drive-by shooting in the middle of the afternoon yesterday. Just days earlier, an FBI raid resulted in the arrest of 20 alleged Newburgh gang members.

Residents throughout the community say they are concerned over the violence and want more officers on the streets, not less. PBA officials agree, saying that losing 15 of their 35 patrolmen would be devastating.

Mayor Nicholas Valentine said that the city is dealing with big budget issues and simply doesn't have the money it needs.
