Newburgh youths spoke out yesterday to help combat a history of violence, drugs and gangs in the city.

More than 100 teens signed in to talk about cleaning up Newburgh's streets. The group said the city could use more extra-curricular activities, but with little money, that could take time.

A panel of teachers and parents said the first thing teens need to do is stay in school. The panel reported that over the past five years, an average class size drops by 400 between sophomore and senior years.

Many teens also said jobs and better transportation are needed for safety, something city officials said they're working on.

"I've seen people suffer because someone died for no reason, for some drugs," said Nickeya Lewis, who had two brothers killed in drive-by shootings.
