The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) calls the recurring problems with the emergency siren system at the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant intolerable.

Another another four-county test of the plant?s emergency siren system was conducted Wednesday and county officials say 19 siren failed. Entergy, which owns Indian Point, claimed only two sirens failed. The discrepancy comes from the fact that the counties and Entergy cannot agree on how to interpret computer data from sensors used to monitor tests of the sirens. However, an Entergy spokesman admits the failure of Rockland County's back up control system should not have happened.

County officials say they just want confidence restored in the siren system, in case it is needed for real. The NRC says it will be keeping close tabs on Indian Point and wants Entergy to install a new siren system within 18 months.
