As gas prices remain high, New York state lawmakers could be debating the idea of a gas tax holiday.

Neighboring state Connecticut started its first day of tax-free gas on Friday.

Now, New York leaders know it's time for a similar fix.

"What we're hoping to do is also establish a gas tax holiday," says Assemblyman Kenneth Zebrowski.

There are three gas taxes in New York.

"There is on the first $2 a gallon, a sales tax, there's also excise tax and a petroleum business tax," Zebrowski explains.

He believes the first two would provide direct relief. But it's the petroleum business tax where businesses would be liable to pass it on to the consumers.

"So we're pushing pretty hard for it. I'm pretty confident we can come to a deal," Zebrowski says.

And when looking at the proposed timespan, Zebrowski says it could be at least three months.

While it sounds great for drivers, some corporations like the MTA are not on board. The agency is expected to receive 3.3% of its funding from gas taxes this year.

Connecticut drivers are seeing a suspension of 25 cents per gallon, according to Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont's emergency legislation.

Although Zebrowski didn't go into specifics, driver in New York can expect similar savings.
