A small sea of police officers, relatives and community members said goodbye Thursday at a funeral for a rookie NYPD officer who was killed in a crash on a Bronx highway.
Officer Michael Williams's funeral was held at St. Kateri Tekakwitha Roman Catholic Church in LaGrangeville, N.Y.
According to police, the 25-year-old was on duty and had been traveling in a van with other officers when their vehicle hit a concrete barrier on the Bruckner Expressway Sunday. Williams was ejected from the back seat of the van and died from his injuries.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio delivered the eulogy and reminded the audience that Williams's passion for police work was learned from his father, Michael Williams Sr., who is a veteran police officer with the Carmel Police Department.
Williams had only been on the job for about eight months at the time of his death.
