An off-duty Tuxedo Park police officer has been charged with assault in connection to the shooting of a man at a Newburgh bar Friday night.
Police say 40-year-old Michael Taback, of Newburgh, fired a single shot and hit a man in the leg in the parking lot of the Golden Rail Ale House off of Old North Plank Road.
They say an argument between the two men and a woman took a dangerous turn earlier that evening.
Police say Taback struck the 36-year-old man several times in the head with a pistol before shooting him and driving off.
The Golden Rail Ale House owner released a statement saying, "I resent anyone settling their differences on my property. It's just a really horrible time for this to take place because we're just trying to get back on our feet, and this is just unfortunate. I hope the victim makes a speedy and complete recovery."
News 12 reached out to Tuxedo Park Police for a comment on the officer's arrest and said in a statement,
"Michael Taback is employed by the Tuxedo Park Police Department, however, he has not worked since August 2019; he has been out on Workers Compensation due to an on the job injury."
According to a GoFundMe page that was set up in March, Taback was injured after being hit and dragged by a drunk driver. The page also says that he has worked in the U.S. Navy and for the TSA before becoming a police officer. The page raised more than $9,600 for that accident back in 2019
