Two Bronx residents are in custody after leading police on a high-speed chase across the New York border and into Fairfield County Wednesday, authorities say.
Stamford police say 27-year-olds Jonser Hernandez-Mota and Betsy Bermudez assaulted and robbed an off-duty police officer in The Bronx and fled to Connecticut. The pair also committed a strong-armed robber earlier in the day.
Police said the BMW they were driving made its way into Stamford after crossing the border into Greenwich.
A Connecticut State Police car was destroyed by oncoming traffic at the intersection of Summer and Hoyt streets while attempting to stop the BMW.
"There was a car facing me, just completely ripped to shreds," Daniel Scherer said.
Officials said the suspects then drove onto the Merritt Parkway going north, crashed the car into the woods and ran away.
With the help of state police and the NYPD, Stamford police K-9 units and drones were able to catch the pair hiding in private yards.
"If there are people just causing tragedies like that, they have to get caught by the law. It's simple," said Scherer.
The state trooper and drivers of other cars that the trooper collided with were transported to Stamford Hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
State police said Hernandez-Mota did not have a valid license to operate a vehicle and had multiple warrants against him in five states, including several fully extraditable warrants.
Hernandez-Mota is facing numerous charges including two counts of interfering with an office, two counts of reckless endangerment, two counts of reckless driving and two counts of driving the wrong way. He was released on bond and expected to appear in court Thursday.
Bermudez was also released on bond and is scheduled to appear in court on July 16. She was charged with interfering with an office and reckless use of limited access highway by a pedestrian.
Stamford police, Greenwich police, Westchester County police and the FBI assisted in the incident.
