A Saugerties man was sentenced to 25 years in prison for killing a man in 2022.
Joseph Karolys will serve that time in state prison after he was convicted for first-degree manslaughter and assault.
The Ulster County District Attorney’s Office says Karolys beat David Myer to death after a Halloween party. Then, he attempted to cover up the crime by burning evidence.
Myer’s body was discovered the following day on Route 32.
Authorities say Joseph Karolys brutally assaulted the victim inside Karolys' truck, kicked Myer in the head with steel-toe boots after he was removed from the vehicle, and left him on the side of the road. Karolys and his son tried to conceal the crime, including burning the boots Karolys used in the crime in their wood stove, according to prosecutors.
Prosecutors say Karoyls tried to set up someone for the crime who instead cooperated with the investigation and revealed "damaging information" against him. A joint investigation by New York State Police and Saugerties Police revealed Myer’s blood inside the Karolys truck and home, as well as on the truck’s floor mats which had been removed from the truck.
