Orange Co. sheriff's lieutenant indicted for theft
A grand jury has indicted an Orange County sheriff's lieutenant, alleging he stole guns from the sheriff's evidence locker.
Lt. Lloyd Kurth was indicted on several felony charges, including grand larceny. His fiancée, Susan Giordano, was also named in the indictment. They are accused of swiping at least three pistols on at least two occasions in 2004.
Kurth and Giordano pleaded not guilty.
Orange County Sheriff Carl DuBois says the evidence against the pair is there and he is disappointed in the situation. ?It's not a great day for law enforcement,? DuBois says. ?Especially as administrator, it's not really something I like talking about.?
Kurth is the latest law enforcement officer to be hauled into court over allegations of wrongdoing on the job. In August, former Tuxedo Park Police Chief Robert Culhane pleaded guilty to pocketing department funds. Two cops who worked under Culhane, Louis Hock and John Reilly, are accused of fudging their timesheets.
Spring Valley Police Officer David Lebron was accused of sexually abusing a woman, then falsifying police reports to cover it up. He has pleaded not guilty and has been suspended.
Sheriff DuBois says despite the incidents he believes most area law enforcement officers are on the right side of the law.
