Orange County holds memorial for local 9/11 victims
Relatives of the 44 Orange County residents who perished on Sept. 11 gathered at a local memorial Thursday to commemorates the seven-year anniversary of the tragedy.
The remembrance ceremony at Thomas Bull Memorial Park in Montgomery began with a somber procession of victims? families and members of the military.
Brig. General Verle Johnston, of Stewart, spoke to the crowd that gathered in front of a 10-ton granite globe, surrounded by small plaques with the names of the Orange County residents who never returned home on Sept. 11, 2001.
One plaque reminds Lori Feely, of Middletown, and her daughters, of her great loss. Francis Feely, a husband and father, was one of the 2,751 people who were killed at the twin towers.
The Feelys say they prefer to mark this day close to home rather than traveling to Ground Zero in lower Manhattan.
?When they started this, it was really good because at least you know everybody's up here and they come every year and they care,? Feely says.
