More than three weeks after Hurricane Irene destroyed much of the rail lines along the Port Jervis branch of the Metro-North Railroad, limited service has been restored.
For the time being, commuters can now take a train from Port Jervis to Harriman, where they will be transferred to a bus to travel to Ramsey, N.J., where they can take another train into New York City.
Metro-North officials say the damage between Harriman and Suffern is so severe that the entire railroad may need to be rebuilt in that section.
Officials say they could not give a timeline about how long the repairs will take.
