New York Gov. David Paterson visited a Mount Vernon church Sunday and discussed what's ahead as the state attempts to get past the economic crisis.
In his speech at Grace Baptist Church, Paterson said almost 9,000 state workers will likely lose their jobs and taxes will be going up.
"Nobody wants to raise taxes and nobody wants to lay anyone off, but these are the times we face," Paterson said.
Paterson's speech comes after Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver said late Saturday that the state Legislature had agreed to a 2009-10 state budget that will keep school funding flat, restore aid to New York City, and include increased income tax rates for wealthier New Yorkers.
