A two-vehicle crash killed four people on the Taconic State Parkway Wednesday evening, closing parts of the roadway for hours, police say.
It happened in the town of New Castle, near mile marker 9.2.
Police say that a preliminary investigation indicated that a Sprinter van was traveling southbound when it crossed the center median and entered the northbound lanes. They say the van then struck a northbound Honda sedan, which was traveling in the passing lane.
Police say the impact caused the Sprinter van to overturn and become engulfed in flames.
Three people in the van were pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. They say the driver of the Honda, who was transported to the hospital, died from their injuries.
Police say the driver of the Sprinter van remains hospitalized in critical condition at Westchester Medical Center.
The northbound lanes of the Taconic State Parkway remain closed as police investigate.
