A quiet Sunday night in a Wallkill neighborhood ended with a massive police presence and a killer on the loose.
Police say the victim, 52-year-old old Jeffrey Harris, was found fatally stabbed inside his house on Brookline Avenue shortly after 5 p.m.
Authorities shut down the neighborhood to traffic during the investigation.
Neighbors say they were told to stay inside their houses while police were seen canvassing the area for clues.
“It’s New York. It’s Middletown, whatever, it’s Wallkill, it’s just like you never expect it to happen,” said one neighbor as she quickly drove by.
“It’s getting worse around here all the time,” said another neighbor who didn’t give his name.
Wallkill police say Harris was found dead from at least one stab wound to the torso after they were called to the home for a report of an unconscious man.
“I used to see him in the backyard, said Loveleen Kaur. “I’m very sorry to hear about that. I’m scared, too.”
Wallkill police haven't released information yet about a motive, but say they are working with state police and the FBI's Safe Streets Task Force on several active leads to make an arrest.
