Police in both Nassau and Suffolk counties say they have received numerous calls reporting drones being sighted across Long Island.
Who is flying these drones over the tristate area, and what are they doing? Long Islanders like Phil Guzzardi, of Massapequa, want to know.
"I'd love to find out what they are. I don't think it's a threat to us, but I don't know," Guzzardi said.
Nassau police say there have been 55 reports of drone sightings since Friday, and 79 since Nov. 1.
News 12 spoke with former Homeland Security advisor Michael Balboni, who said the public should be asking three questions.
"What's the mission? What's the target? And what is going to be delivered," Balboni said.
Balboni added drones can carry weapons, although it's uncertain what the ones sighted over New York and New Jersey are carrying.
President-elect Donald Trump took to social media about the drones writing, "let the public know, and now. Otherwise shoot them down."
"The challenge there is if you do that in a populated area, that could be incredibly dangerous," Balboni said.
New York State Police say the drones pose no threat to the public. Nassau police tell News 12 the reports they getting are of objects like personally-owned recreational drones and are nothing like what is being reported in New Jersey.
They will continue to monitor the situation.
State lawmakers in New York and New Jersey are calling on the Biden administration to act.
Gov. Kathy Hochul is calling on Congress to extend counter-unmanned aircraft systems activities to select state and local law enforcement. In a statement she says in part:
"Until those powers are granted to state and local officials, the Biden administration must step in by directing additional federal law enforcement to New York and the surrounding region to ensure the safety of our critical infrastructure and our people."
Suffolk police did not provide data on the number of drone sightings.
