Family and friends are mourning the death of a 7-year-old girl from Port Jervis who was killed in a car crash Saturday in New Jersey.
Police say Miayah VanDunk's father was behind the wheel when he lost control of his car in the rain and collided with another vehicle on Route 23 in Wantage, N.J.
Neighbor Adam Masters says VanDunk stood out from the rest of the children thanks to her curly hair and bright smile. The girl also made an impression on her classmates at Anna S. Kuhl Elementary, where she attended first grade.
Counselors have been talking with children at the school to help them understand what happened to their classmate.
"We were trying to look at [the] positives of Miayah, like maybe good experiences they had, or how they remember her," says school counselor Erin Bratton.
The students wrote messages in VanDunk's yearbook, which will be given to the girl's family.
VanDunk's father, brother and and her little brother and sister also suffered injuries in the accident. All three are recovering.
