Police say a Poughkeepsie man is facing child endangerment charges among others for an incident Friday morning involving a 14-year-old girl.

It was around 8:30 a.m. when a witness came into the police station saying that a girl was walking to school near Carroll Street when the man grabbed her and took her down the street.

Authorities say several witnesses saw the incident and confronted the suspect, who then told them he was a police officer and threatened to arrest them. When the witnesses pushed further, the suspect then released the girl.

One of the witnesses involved then took the girl to police headquarters. According to police, the suspect, who did not know the girl, was identified as a 61-year-old City of Poughkeepsie resident.

Authorities then located the suspect and took him into custody.

After consulting with the District Attorney’s Office, the man was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, criminal impersonation in the second degree, and unlawful imprisonment in the second degree.

He was arraigned in Poughkeepsie City Court and subsequently turned over to New York State Police on an outstanding warrant.
