Putnam County honors Sheriff Kevin McConville with emotional farewell in Cold Spring
Putnam County said goodbye to Sheriff Kevin McConville Wednesday, following his passing last week after years of service to the community.
Hundreds of officers from across the state joined his family at Our Lady of Loretto Church in Cold Spring to honor his legacy.
Uniforms, helicopters, bagpipes, and tears marked the farewell to a native son.
Captain Michael Grasso of the Putnam County Sheriff's Department said, "He was a leader. We've had a great outpouring from the community, from Putnam County as a whole, and from our law enforcement brothers and sisters."
McConville served as chief at the MTA during 9/11 and later helped restore Putnam County's accreditation from the state. He also upgraded the department's radio system and focused on elevating professionalism in policing.
Putnam County Executive Kevin Byrne said, "He was very much mission focused and focused on delivering results for the people of Putnam County."
McConville had announced last June he would not seek re-election due to health issues.
