Rain disrupted Memorial Day weekend plans across the island, forcing several events to be canceled or moved indoors.
In Freeport along the Nautical Mile, Mayor Robert Kennedy says the village will be doing their parade inside and has had to cancel their barbecue.
“The Nautical Mile would be packed on this weekend. It's not now,” Kennedy said. “Not to mention all of the fire department and the DPW employees and the police department that were scheduled to work today and tomorrow. They all have to take off.”
Some shops said they barely saw any customers on a weekend that is usually packed.
“It's just been dead. Barely any people coming in,” said Angelina Monroy, manager at Sam’s Scoops ice cream shop. “Ice cream is definitely a weather-based type of job.”
But Freeport is still doing its Memorial Day Observance inside on Monday morning.
“It’s not about barbecues,” said Kennedy, a Navy veteran. “This weekend is about remembering those who lost their lives for the for this country."
Jones Beach hosted its reenactment inside for any visitors, but the beach itself remained empty.
“It was a good time to get out of the house and come here and see this,” said Jordan Brady.
“It's better than sitting at home doing nothing,” said Oskar Puk.
There is a silver lining: this year’s calendar brings one of the longest summers possible, with an early Memorial Day and a late Labor Day extending the season by nearly a week.
