Rainy days in The Bronx often bring ponding water to local roadways, but a trash-filled swamp is growing in a Soundview parking lot - to the frustration of the property owner and the disgust of residents.
The rainwater-pond-turned-cesspool now sits in the parking lot of the Clason Point Post Office, Cee & Cee Department Store, Western Beef grocery and other businesses. Dirty mattresses, bags of trash, feces and more are attracting animals and a moss-like growth in the water.
Harlorn, LLC, the company that owns the lot, told News 12 that part of the problem is illegal dumping from the neighborhood.
The family-owned business plans to bring a stormwater drain team to suck up the water and clear out the trash.
It encourages anyone who sees the mess to contact them directly at 914-253-6500. People can also report illegal dumping to 311.
According to the Department of Sanitation, it is the owner’s responsibility because it is private property. However, the agency said it is investigating to see if a summons is warranted.
