The Ramapo man who walked into a Sloatsburg village courtroom in May and opened fire was sentenced to 25 years in prison Monday.

Leo Lewis, 60, was appearing at a trial for a case he filed against a woman who had accused him of assault last year. He had smuggled a sawed-off rifle into the courtroom and fired a shot toward the front of the room, narrowly missing the judge.

Authorities say Lewis targeted the woman he was suing. Lewis was acquitted of assaulting Sara Bannout and filed suit against her for the legal fees he incurred.

Thomas Newman Jr., the judge in the courtroom during the shooting, said he agrees with the sentence. Lewis was charged with second-degree attempted murder and weapons charges and was convicted in December.

Since the incident, Sloatsburg Mayor Carl Wright has hired extra court security.
