A Yonkers high school senior reached a milestone years in the making Tuesday night.
Ray Jones became the first 1,000-point scorer in the history of the Charter School of Educational Excellence in Yonkers.
Jones, a four-year captain and the leader of the Owls boys varsity basketball program, needed just six points to hit the mark — and he wasted no time. The gym erupted as the senior crossed the threshold, prompting a special ceremony honoring his achievement.
Jones says trust, hard work and a willingness to learn have shaped his journey.
“You gotta have the hunger and mentality to keep getting better each and every day,” he said.
School leaders praised not only his talent, but his character.
“His loyalty, his commitment, his work ethic — he’s a special kid,” said Michael Desimone, the school’s director of health.
Coach Salim Fofana added that the entire community is proud to stand behind Jones.
For Jones, the milestone reflects years of dedication — and the leadership he’s built one rep at a time.
