People gathered for a memorial service in Poughkeepsie Friday to mark the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

The ceremony was hosted at the Family Court Center by Dutchess County Family Court Judge Tracy McKenzie.

Many New Yorkers still remember the moment they heard the news 20 years ago. The emotions and painful images from that day are still seared in the minds of many.

A prayer, a moment of silence and a rendition of "God Bless America" took place at the steps of the family courthouse as the community continues to mourn those who passed in the attacks.

The Rev. Dr. Edward Hunt, of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, led the community in prayer. He says the 20th anniversary also marks the end to the nation’s longest war and a tremendous struggle.

"We have not let our flag hit the ground,” Hunt says. “When we see someone in combat fatigues or we see someone in a uniform — thank them, because they don't even know us, but they're willing to die for us."

Flags were lowered to half-staff at the courthouse ahead of the solemn anniversary.
