The Rockland County Waste Management Authority is trying to encourage school districts to recycle at its facility.
Waste management leaders met with members of each Rockland school district Friday to discuss the program. Some schools already use private recyclers, but could change their contracts for next school year. The authority is using rebates and school field trips for students to the facility as an enticement into its program.
Approximately 800 tons of material are processed at the facility each week. The authority says this is more than just a cost-effective program for schools, it can also be an educational one for the students.
