People with chlorinated pools may face a tough time reopening this year as supplies of chlorine tablets are drying up.

The big factor causing the shortage is that last year during the pandemic, there was a surge of families installing new pools.

Westrock Pools in Nanuet stocked up on supplies as a precaution - which paid off. The owner says he has a flood of requests for his 5,500 drums of chlorine tablets.

"Other retail stores calling me for chemicals… even from outside Rockland County, from Bergen County, Westchester County, Orange County are coming down for chemicals," says Andrew Bari, of Westrock Pools.

That's not the only item in short supply.

"There's shortages of plastics, liners for pools, heaters for pools. It's really a shame. There's a huge demand but it will be hard to fill everyone's orders," says Bari.

When Texas battled bitter temperatures, Bari says over 200,000 pools there were damaged, drying up supplies in the market. The ice storm also froze one the largest resin manufacturers -- that resin is used for liners and plastic pool parts. And a fire at another big pool industry manufacturer in Louisiana last year was more salt in the wound for the industry.

"It's a horrible feeling not being able to fill the order, but it's out of our control," says Bari.
