One day after a partial garage collapse at a Poughkeepsie mall, a similar incident took place Friday at a rest area on the NYS Thruway in Sloatsburg.
According to police, a 24-by-60 foot roof section of a two-story parking garage collapsed at around 6:30 a.m. Thruway Authority officials say plow operators pushed the snow into a pile about 5 feet high on top of the corner parking spots. Officials say the weight of the snow caused the collapse. No cars were at that part of the garage at the time and no one was injured.
Thruway officials say the parking spots underneath the piled snow weren?t used often. However, they say they are lucky the collapse didn?t occur at 6:30 p.m. when the garage is typically crowded. Officials say the rest of the parking garage is still safe.
