A man accused of attacking a security guard while armed with a knife was fatally shot Thursday at a Newburgh emergency room.
Fire officials say they were initially dispatched to Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital after a fire alarm box was pulled in the lobby.
Hospital staff determined that a disorderly individual was responsible for pulling the alarm. When confronted, he brandished the knife and began to attack the security guard.
The man, now identified as 45-year-old Carlos Oritz, was hit by a single round fired from the guard’s gun.
Police arrived at the scene at around 11:07 p.m.
Oritz was later pronounced dead. Authorities say a woman near the altercation also sustained injuries not considered life-threatening.
No charges have been filed as of Friday morning. Anyone with additional information is asked to call 845-569-7519.
