Authorities are investigating after shots were fired at a mosque in Pike County over the weekend during Ramadan.
Law enforcement says at least four rounds were fired at the Pike County Islamic Center on Mountain Avenue in Matamoras.
Images shared with News 12 show damage to the building, including bullet strikes to a door, a shelf and mosque décor — including a metal sign hanging above a wine glass rack.
According to the Eastern Pike Regional Police Department, the building was empty at the time of the shooting. A worshiper who posted about the incident on Facebook and took video of the police response described being at the mosque later that night to observe the religious holiday with his wife and 8-year-old daughter.
Police have not announced any arrests. The investigation remains ongoing.
The Pike County Islamic Center is affiliated with a sister mosque in Middletown, New York. In response to heightened awareness of potential threats, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office says it is conducting additional security checks during worship times.
“The Orange County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division implements extra security checks during worship times when there is an increased awareness of potential threats,” the agency said in a statement. “For security reasons, we cannot disclose specific times or locations for these enhanced patrols or checks.”
Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the Eastern Pike Regional Police Department.
