A Rockland County man says one of the men facing a charge in connection with his brother's death down in Texas was recently released on personal bond.

Nick Kantor, of Sloatsburg, is speaking out after 18-year-old Jeremiah Tabb was released on a personal bond earlier this month.

The teen is facing a tampering with evidence charge for allegedly trying to get rid of the gun involved in a shootout between rival groups. The gunfire struck a dozen people - including 25-year-old Airmont native Doug Kantor - in a popular nightlife area in Austin back in June 2021.

Kantor died in the hospital.

"The message that's sent to the general public and to us is that it's OK for somebody to go out and shoot into a crowd and kill people, and as long as the prosecution doesn't feel like prosecuting then you're welcome to do as you please," says Kantor.

Kantor says he feels that the Austin Police Department is the only ones truly trying to bring his family justice.

"The police officers and the detectives brought in a mountain of evidence along with all the suspects. And the police did their job incredibly despite the fact that they were defunded $150 million," he says.

Tabb is said to be out on a $150,000 personal bond, meaning if he misses any court dates, that's when he will have to pay up.

News 12 reached out to the Travis County District Attorney's Office for comment and it released the following statement: “The Travis County District Attorney’s Office opposed pre-trial release in this case. Our office continues to think of the family of Mr. Kantor and all of the victims of this senseless act of violence. The District Attorney's office will not rest until everyone responsible is held accountable.”
