A Somers mother says she feels the school board “silenced” her during a meeting when she raised concerns about how her disabled son was treated on the bus.

Sarah Kooluris says a video from February shows her son getting berated by a school bus monitor for throwing up while aboard the bus.

“He threw up the second he boarded the bus. So, you hear the monitor immediately screaming at him, telling him to ‘put his f-in fingers out if his face,’ berating him, screaming, ‘I can’t believe you're doing this, what's wrong with you?’ Just completely verbally abusive,” she says.

Kooluris says she filed a Dignity for All Students Act report after seeing the footage of the incident.

DASA is meant to protect students from harassment, bullying and discrimination, and when a report is filed, it triggers an investigation into the incident.

Kooluris says the investigation “confirmed everything else that we saw, that she was speaking to him in a demeaning and berating manner, that she was acting aggressively towards him.”

Kooluris received information from the district that the monitor was taken off the bus and moved to another bus.

Kooluris says she went to a school board meeting on Tuesday in hopes of getting a response directly from the board.

However, she says as she was speaking about the incident, the board cut off her mic, cut off the camera and walked out of the room.

“This is the response that I get from the admin of the school? To silence me? To act like this didn't happen?” Kooluris says.

The school district said in a statement that Kooluris’ comments violated a policy which forbids identifying a specific child or employee of the district. They say they reminded Kooluris of this policy several times before they called for a brief recess of the meeting.

The school district says they are aware of the incident on the bus and that an investigation was completed.
