Many businesses in Somerville have reopened after a fire on Tuesday afternoon forced them to close for nearly two days, police announced today in a social media post.
Nearly 100 firefighters battled the flames when the fire broke out, according to Joseph Stitley, chief of Somerville Fire Department. More than 15 people were displaced. Many businesses nearby on West Main Street had to evacuate. Several storefronts downtown were shuttered due to extensive damage.
Somerville police posted on Instagram that businesses are back up and running.
“Let’s come together and help our local businesses thrive again. Whether it’s grabbing a coffee, dining out, or shopping, every little bit helps,” the Instagram post said.
The community has rallied behind those still trying to pick up the pieces. News 12 was told four businesses — King Tut, Mike's Courtside Kitchen, Yoga Odyssey and Sushi Yokohama — are still closed.
A "community strong" tent will be set up this weekend at the Somerset County Regional Farmers Market. Donations will be collected for those affected by the fire. It will run on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Somerville Middle School.
