Westchester County Legislator Vedat Gashi is challenging Rep. Jamaal Bowman for the 16th Congressional District seat, News 12 has learned.

Sources tell News 12’s Tara Rosenblum that Gashi will formally announce his candidacy in a week.

Vedat is a Yorktown resident, a real estate attorney and a moderate Democrat. Bowman is a freshman progressive Democrat from Yonkers.

This challenge is made possible due to redistricting. It is a snapshot of what is playing out statewide — the internal tug of war between moderates and progressives in the state's Democratic party.
