The Spackenkill High School athletic field is normally the backdrop to major
games, but in a few days it’ll host an outdoor, socially distant play.
High school senior Macy Hammond is excited to
hit the stage one last time. She’s playing the lead female role in the drama
club’s production of "The Wedding
Singer."
“I feel really lucky as a senior to have gotten
my final performance with Spack on stage because it's my family,” says Hammond.
“I love it so much.”
The class of 2020 weren’t able to take their
final bow due to the global pandemic, but this year has its possibilities.
“A priority of the adults was to get these kids
back together. Not only for their growth as performers, but also to just get
the kids being social again after what's been a really hard year,” says high
school teacher and drama club advisor Holden Maiorana.
News 12 is told students will wear clear masks
to complement their costumes. The audience will also have plenty room to comply
with CDC guidelines.
Spackenkill High school faculty and staff aren’t
the only people thinking outside the box, Beacon High School will also perform
outdoors.
Director of the ‘Beacon Players’
at Beacon High School, Anthony Scarrone, revealed their students will perform "Rent."
"They were basically robbed of everything
last year. So it was almost like
now they're almost starting to feel that this was the beginning of something
where they could feel normal again,” says Scarrone.
