Dominican nuns in Sparkill are working to try to end human trafficking that preys on women and children.
The sisters have been educating themselves on human trafficking, which mostly involves women and children being bought and sold for sexual purposes. A spa in Airmont was busted for prostitution recently and the immigration status of the women was investigated. Also, a dozen people were arrested in Spring Valley after it was discovered women between the ages of 17 and 24 arrested for prostitution were working off debts from an international smuggling ring.
Now the nuns are supporting legislation being proposed in New York State that would help law enforcement squash the industry but also go after those who use their services. The sisters say it is just the beginning of their fight to end human trafficking.
