Special-needs adults delivering meals Wednesday in Suffern showed up to peoples' doors with more than just food.
The group from New Concepts for Living in Bergen County, NJ brings meals to home-bound seniors in Suffern every Wednesday on behalf of Meals on Wheels Rockland, though this Wednesday's meals came with special greetings and hand-made cards.
"We get to help people who can't go into the community and get food for themselves," Shannon Thorden said, "so that's where we come in handy."
NCFL staff said the team's meal delivery responsibilities and the interactions with local seniors help them grow and see that they have an important place in their community.
Retirees Joe and Pat Attardo were so excited ahead of today's visit from the NCFL gang they wanted to return the favor by putting together some cards for them.
As they have become less mobile, the couple has come to rely on Meals on Wheels for the meals and the human interactions.
They even put a $5 bill in each card, which thoroughly thrilled the meal deliverers.
"They're so nice," Pat Attardo said. "It's just a wonderful feeling to even give them a card with a little something in it. Wonderful organization. Wonderful people."
The crew will be on the road again next week and is planning a special round of deliveries during the late December holiday season.
"It's nice to give back and I love helping people," meal deliverer Bob Weidmann said, "so this is awesome for me."
