A Spring Valley assistant building inspector pleaded not guilty to charges in connection with a deadly fire at his brief arraignment at the Rockland County courthouse Wednesday.
On Monday, Rockland County District Attorney Tom Walsh announced that Raymond Canario, 45, had been indicted on multiple charges in connection to a fatal fire back in March at the Evergreen Court Home for Adults. The devastating fire at the assisted living facility claimed the lives of a resident and volunteer firefighter Jared Lloyd.
MORE:
Canario is facing nine criminal complaints against him, including allegedly falsifying inspection reports to the state years before the fatal fire.
He was indicted on three counts of offering a false instrument for filing in the first degree, three counts of offering a false instrument for filing in the second degree, and three counts of falsifying business records in the second degree.
Canario is among six people charged in connection to the fire. Spring Valley Building Department Chief Wayne Ballard has also been indicted on three counts of filing fraudulent reports.
Canario had previously pleaded not guilty to charges of submitting false reports to the state regarding inspections.
Both men are facing up to three years in prison.
Both men still reportedly work for the village despite their legal troubles.
As he was leaving Rockland County courthouse today, Canario refused to answer questions about the indictments or if he was still employed by the village.
He is due back in court on Dec. 8.
