Stamford police say the man responsible for a deadly pedestrian accident several months ago has turned himself in.

Alec Ward, 26, of Shelton, stood before Judge Gary White Monday.

Ward turned himself in to Stamford police early Monday morning and was being held on a $50,000 bond.

Police say Ward was at a light on the Exit 9 southbound ramp off I-95 at East Main Street early in the morning on March 23. They say he wasn't paying attention when the light turned green and struck and killed 68-year-old Elena Laos.

"She was right in front of him when he hit her," said Sgt. Jeffrey Booth.

Police say Ward was not intoxicated or on his phone. They say he didn't see her.

"When the light turned green, he went and he hit her and struck her and she got knocked to the ground," said Booth.

Police say Ward stayed at the scene and tried to help Laos. Ward's attorney says his client is a hardworking father of three with no criminal record, who is deeply sorry for his actions.

"Tragic circumstances and Mr. Ward and his family sympathize with the victim's family in this matter," said Vincent Noce, Ward's attorney.

Police want to remind drivers that pedestrians have the right of way.

"We're trying to get the message out - 'hey, listen - pedestrians do have a lot of protections in the law,'" said Booth.

Ward is due back in court Sept. 26 on a promise to appear.

Police say Ward's car was not registered.

The victim's family did not want to comment.
