The New York Attorney General’s Office says an off-duty Monticello Village police officer struck a man as he was crossing the street last month, prompting a state investigation.

Officials say the crash happened around 6:03 p.m. on Nov. 25 near the intersection of Pleasant and High streets, when the man was hit by the off-duty officer, who was driving his personal vehicle. The victim was taken to a local hospital and died five days later, on Nov. 30.

According to the Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation (OSI), the agency has opened a formal investigation into the death. State law mandates that OSI review any incident in which a police or peace officer, on duty or off duty, may have caused a person’s death by an act or omission.

No charges have been filed at this time, and OSI says the facts released so far are preliminary and subject to change as the investigation continues.
