Assembly Republicans introduced an impeachment resolution to remove the governor from office.

Cuomo says he will not resign amid scandals over sexual harassment accusations against him and his administration's handling of nursing homes.

The Republicans say there are too many accusations against the governor for him to continue to lead.

Since Cuomo says he has no plans to step down, some officials say they have to take it into their own hands.

There is still a long way to go for the impeachment amendment. At this point, they need bipartisan support but only a handful of Democrats in the entire Legislature are willing to put their name behind impeachment.

Many others are asking the governor to step down, including the state's top Democratic lawmaker, Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins.

She said in a statement, "Every day there is another account that is drawing away from the business of government. For the good of the state, Gov. Cuomo must resign."

Democratic State Senator Elijah Reichlin-Melnick agreed.

"He cannot effectively run the state when he is dealing with so many things and that's why I said for the good of New York State I think it's time for him to step down and for Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul to step up," he said.

But not all legislators are quickly pushing for impeachment.

More than a dozen Democratic Assemblywomen are writing a letter to state Attorney General Letitia James urging her to finish her investigation while asking other lawmakers to stop undermining her position by calling for resignation and impeachment.

Impeachment would require a majority of the Assembly to approve the measure - then two-thirds of the state Senate would need to convict.

Only one governor in New York's history has ever been impeached.
