Spring Valley is set to receive $2.5 million from the state to transform a vacant lot into affordable housing and more.

The money will go toward turning the large lot along North Main Street into 72 units of family housing with 11,000 square feet of commercial space on the ground floor. The site will sit across from 53 units of affordable senior housing and another 11,000 square feet of commercial space.

A representative from Gov. Eliot Spitzer's office met with Spring Valley Mayor George Darden to make the announcement Tuesday. The town is one of several that will receive funding under the Restore New York program.

State Sen. Thomas Morahan and Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee helped secure the money. Construction is expected to begin March 1.
