Westchester residents take advantage of the snow day

Many residents across the Hudson Valley took advantage of the snow.

But despite officials urging residents not to drive, many didn’t listen. News 12 witnessed many cars stuck on the side of the road.

One driver tells News 12 she regretted leaving her house immediately.

“Honestly, I have a Jeep Compass and my tires keep locking. It's scary,” said Sarah Cavalier, “I shouldn’t have come outside at all.”

Others says this weather made for a great excuse to stay in, spend time with loved ones, and do some self-care.

Roads will remain slick Monday morning

A winter storm to remember - that's how people who had to work in it Sunday described what unfolded.

"It's no joke," said a Mamaroneck resident.

The day started with heavy snow that created difficult driving conditions on streets, roads and the parkways. Drivers say it was especially bad along the on and off ramps of the parkways.

People were urged to stay off the roads but not everyone did.

"They come out here, they don't have four-wheel drive and they're stuck all over the place. Use your head, stay off the roads," said Louis, who was plowing roads in Yonkers.

Many businesses closed for the day or early.

DPW crews around the Hudson Valley were out in full force and will continue to be into Monday.

As of Sunday night, conditions were still slick. Officials urge people to stay home, if possible.

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano warns residents whose vehicle are parked on snow emergency routes will be towed during winters storm cleanup efforts.

Spano says he and other city officials have been pushing for the snow emergency routes to be cleared because if cars are parked, the plows will pile the snow onto them and the snow will freeze as the temperatures drop.

He said it's expensive to get the cars out of those situations for the city "and it causes a real problem."

Spano says he's been asking residents to remove their cars out of snow emergency routes because they have the potential to get ticketed or towed or snowed in.

Spano hopes that crews continue their cleanup from "curb to curb" and adds that it will be the relief residents will see a week from Sunday.

Snow, freezing rain create rough road conditions in Westchester

News 12’s Jackie Gillis was in Scarsdale where many cars attempting to exit the Hutchinson River Parkway were getting stuck in the snow.

Snow and freezing rain are making road conditions rough for motorists. Anyone considering driving tonight should think twice. But there were those who were enjoying a snowy stroll.

"It's lovely. We're walking, it's a little bit treacherous…We actually love the snow...as long as we don't have to drive or go to work."

DPW truck, Thunderbolt 12 stuck in snow along I-87

A cautionary tale unfolded in Tarrytown Sunday afternoon when a DPW truck and Thunderbolt 12 got stuck in a snowdrift.

News 12's Carol Wilkinson reported from I-87 where the plow driver was shoveling dirt under his tires in an effort to gain some traction.

"This is what you want to avoid," she said. "Don't come out here if you don't have to be out here."

New Rochelle charity helps city's homeless stay warm through overnight snowstorm

A New Rochelle-based charity is doing its part to protect those in need, against the snow and frigid temperatures of the overnight storm.

Jim Killoran, of the Fuller Center for Housing, packed up all the items he needed on Saturday to help those who otherwise won't have protection against the cold.

"This is that type of night, a disaster night that people can get frostbite, etc.," Killoran said.

He set off in his white van on a mission of mercy throughout the streets of New Rochelle. He encountered "Mario," who is not homeless, but needed some warm gear.

"Socks and gloves that's it. He gave it to me free. He gives to everybody in New Rochelle. My English is not that perfect, but I've known him for a long time." he said.

With the words of gratitude and "thank you" echoing in his ears, Killoran sought out anyone on the street who might need help on Saturday's cold winter night.

"So, tonight I'll drive around, which I've done many times, and look at where some of the homeless may be. The train station, the laundromat, at the CVS and see if they need anything," Killoran said.

The gloves, socks and warm hats are collected through donations from individuals, schools and community organizations.

"My faith says you've have got to have the priority to help those that have nothing and the Bible says that, so that's motivated me and also, there we go, but for the grace of God. It could happen to any of us, you know?" Killoran said.

Travelers rush to beat the storm at Westchester County Airport

With snow expected to begin overnight, travelers at Westchester County Airport spent time adjusting plans to get ahead of the approaching storm. Many moved up flights and took advantage of the sunny weather before conditions drastically change.

George B. and his family decided to return from vacation a day early after hearing about the forecast.

“We were planning on coming in Sunday. We heard about the storm and said it was a good idea to move it up to Saturday,” he said. “We got in just before the storm and the sun is still out.”

Others were heading out to warmer destinations. Anne M. was traveling to Florida with her new cat, Patches. “She’ll be a Florida cat, watching the birds on the golf course,” Anne said. “We’re very happy and we’ll get in safe.

According to FlightAware.com, more than 1,500 flights have already been canceled over the next 48 hours at New York City-area airports, with more cancellations expected.

Travel expert Cindy Greenstein, known as “The Points Mom,” advises travelers to prepare for delays. She recommends checking nearby hotels and even making proactive reservations in case flights are disrupted.
With flights leaving on time Friday and clear skies overhead, it was the calm before the storm.
