Students at Middletown High School today protested the district's plan to cut numerous programs because of budget issues.
Among the programs on the chopping block is the Navy JROTC program.
Participants say the program is like a family to them and the cuts would be devastating.
Those in the program are taking the initiative like the military leaders they one day hope to become by staging protests and launching petition drives that have so far collected hundreds of signatures.
The district, however, is facing a number of tough choices after budget shortfalls and reductions in state aid.
The recent state budget agreement may save many programs across the state, as more than $250 million of the $1.5 billion in education aid cuts have been restored.
