A new survey shows that some Bronx residents are leaving themselves open to the risk of HIV infection. It has long been known that using condoms, limiting sexual partners and avoiding intravenous drugs can reduce the risk of contracting HIV. However, a Department of Health study shows that 18 percent of Bronx and city residents are at risk for HIV because of multiple partners or drug use. Of that group, 60 percent don?t use condoms at all and almost all of them think they?re safe from infection. One-and-a-half percent of New York City residents are infected with HIV, nearly four times the national average. The health commissioner advises all residents to get tested and learn their HIV status.The city also runs a free condom program.
