A married couple who has been together for 66 years is celebrating Valentine's Day - and being together in sickness and in health.
Elizabeth and James Mooney have been through many trials and tribulations from starting a family to losing a daughter in a car crash to becoming grandparents. The couple retired to Florida and has had similar heart problems, even getting the same heart procedure at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern.
"At least we always get to do things together," says Elizabeth Mooney.
James Mooney was the hospital's first patient to undergo transcatheter aortic valve replacement, or TAVR, in January 2021. Elizabeth Mooney then had hers late last year.
Dr. Chirag Badami is a heart surgeon at Good Samaritan and says that TAVR is a minimally invasive procedure that fixes the aortic valve.
It takes about an hour and a half, and patients typically go home in a day.
"A touching feeling. Especially in heart month to talk about it on Valentine's Day, that this couple of 60 years got to prolong their life and live symptom-free for hopefully many more years to come," he says.
Now the longtime love birds are doing that.
"We're currently going to PT at Helen Hayes. Together," says Elizabeth.
News 12 is told that Good Samaritan Hospital recently reached a milestone 100 transcatheter aortic valve replacement patients.
