A Suffern teen was back in court Monday to face charges in connection with an alleged drunk driving accident that claimed the life of a Suffern High School sophomore this weekend.
Police say the crash early Saturday morning on Route 202 in Montebello killed Jacqueline Zangrilli and injured three others.
Officials accuse the 17-year-old of being under the influence of drugs and alcohol when he crashed his Jaguar into a telephone pole. In court, prosecutors said he was going 70 mph in a 45 zone at the time of the crash.
He's now charged with manslaughter, DWI, vehicular manslaughter and a host of other felony charges.
As for the terms of his release, he is not allowed to go anywhere without his parents, only allowed to go to school, doctors' appointments or meetings connected to his case. He must check in every day with his probation officer, and he is not allowed to drive.
His junior license has been suspended, but News 12 also learned that under a junior license, he wasn't supposed to be driving after 9 p.m. and was only allowed to have one passenger in the car - both conditions he violated.
Another condition set Monday was orders of protection for all three surviving victims of the crash, meaning the defendant cannot communicate with them while his case is pending.
According to New York law, manslaughter carries a minimum of 1 to 3 years behind bars and a maximum of 15 years.
Zangrilli is being remembered online as an incredible daughter, sister, friend and athlete who loved field hockey and basketball. A family friend tells at News 12 she had just turned 16 last month.
Donations are pouring in on a GoFundMe page, raising more than $89,000 in less than 24 hours.
A visitation will take place for Zangrilli on Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Wanamaker and Carlough Funeral Home in Suffern.
Her funeral is set for Thursday at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Suffern.
