The Suffolk County Police Department hosted its ninth annual Prom Impact event Saturday in Brentwood to give local students the chance to shop for prom outfits at no cost.

The event drew hundreds of teens from across the area who were all searching for the perfect look for their big night.

“I came here to pick out a prom dress, something to wear to have a fun experience,” said William Floyd High School senior Jennifher Sebastian.

Students were able to choose from a wide variety of options, including formal gowns, suits, shoes and accessories.

Everything at the event was completely free, thanks to donations from local stores and community members.

“I like the color. I’ve always loved black. It’s great for me,” said Central Islip High School senior Selvin Hernandez, who found a tuxedo for prom.

Renting tuxedos can range from $100 to $300 and prom dresses can go for up to $600. Organizers say the goal is to make sure every student has the opportunity to attend prom and feel confident and included, regardless of financial circumstances.

“This way they can also go to prom,” Hernandez added. “It’s an event that’s once a year and doesn’t come back.”

Police officers involved in the initiative say the best way to give back to the community is to help local students.

“It’s important for a kid to feel good in their final days and end their high school career looking the best they can,” said Detective Sgt, Tamika Mays.
