A Sullivan County foster family, who are also military veterans, got the surprise of their lives on national TV last month when they found out they won a home makeover on "The Jennifer Hudson Show."

Army veterans Renee and Shomari Green are middle school sweethearts who’ve been married for 14 years and are raising their family of seven, including two foster children, in a 6,000-square-foot fixer-upper in Monticello. 

 “We bought the house in 2017,” said Renee. “It’s beautiful and big, but we didn’t realize there were some issues.” 

Thanks to Operation Homefront, a nonprofit that helps military families, the couple were entered to win a home makeover on "The Jennifer Hudson Show," and got the surprise of their lives in November when they found out live on set that they won. 

“We did a few interviews, and we were deemed semifinalists. The show did not tell us anything whatsoever. They kept everything in the dark!” 

Celebrity designers Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent will make over two rooms within the next few weeks: the couple’s living room and their children’s play area. 

“They keep asking us for ideas moving forward, and we just told them the kind of things we like,” said Shomari.” 

Shomari is a stay-at-home dad struggling with health issues, and Renee works from home in the mental health field. 

They say their busy lives make them a perfect fit for the makeover and that they couldn’t be more grateful for the help. 

“It’ll be incredible. I’m just excited because I know the kids will be excited and once the kids are happy, I’m fine,” said Shomari.
