A road trip to Westmoreland Sanctuary in Mount Kisco will offer far more than meets the eye.

It makes up just about 700 acres in Westchester County, with more than 8 miles of hiking trails.

"Part of our mission, and part of being a sanctuary, is to give you peace and a sort of a respite from the day-to-day life," said Executive Director Ann Paul.

It's where plenty programs are offered and are even catered to your interests.

You can book a time to learn how to create floral decorations, build a blue bird nesting box, or even navigate through Westmoreland’s woods, off-trail, using just a map and compass.

"It's to encourage people to get outside, encourage self-directed learning, or just to relax," Paul said.

Inside the museum, visitors can get up close and personal with about a dozen animals that are mostly native to the land.

"You can come in, we can talk about the different animals, you can touch them," Paul says, "you can understand their adaptations to their environment."

Whether it's to admire the turtles, birds or trees, take your time in the tranquility of nature on this Road Trip: Close to Home.
